Chapter Six

From his vantage point in the trees, Angel watched the ranch house. He felt the stirring deep inside, the urge for action. He set his teeth against the impatience. He had been too anxious the last time. He had missed his shot. Sundown might not know his own name, but he had the instincts of a seasoned bounty hunter. Somehow, he had guessed a gun was pointed at him. One second, he had been in Angel's sights, the next, he was ducking under the bullet. That marked a man with keen senses.

He reflected upon his attempt to kill Sundown. The reason was self-preservation, but it lacked the intense excitement he craved. To kill a man was not simply the aiming of a gun and pulling the trigger. Anyone could execute another person. He enjoyed the stimulation of the confrontation, the drama, having a crowd gather to watch.

He wondered if he was sick in both his head and soul. The first time he had drawn his gun on another man, he discovered it to be the most stimulating thrill of his life. The possibility of dying, the thought of taking the ultimate chance – it was a feeling that outweighed any risk.

At the moment of truth, every beat of the heart was felt, every nerve tingled, his entire body was engulfed with the heated passion of the moment. Two lives dangled in the balance. Smell, touch, hearing, sight, every sensation was magnified a thousand times over. No feeling in the world could match the intense excitement of the moment.

Angel stretched out his hand and studied it. His fingers were like iron spokes, tough, tempered, dependable. There was nary a quiver, not a single muscle-twitch to lessen his prowess with a gun. He had tested his skill a number of times, man to man. The mental and physical fulfillment of the battle had been sweet. Reviewing the different events in his mind, he recalled the fear in each man's eyes, the dread uncertainty of their own skill. He vividly recalled the surprise and shocked expressions, as his superior quickness with a gun sent lead messengers of death into their bodies.

Sitting there, he watched the resilient man chopping wood. He was recovering rapidly. From what Rival described, the trip over rocks and through the brush would have killed most men. The fact that Sundown survived proved he was a tough man. To already be up and around was nothing short of a miracle.

He thought back to their initial encounter. Sundown had arrived to drive them away from Floren with a mere handgun, while more than two hundred feet away. To even come close to them from that distance was a surprising feat.

Had he taken time to use a rifle, he might well have killed one or more of them.

He gnashed his teeth at the memory. Talk about dumb luck. The man surely lived a charmed life. One of their hastily returned bullets had nearly removed his head … but they didn't know
